Our Promise
The Locally Owned Standard
This directory exists so you can search local first. Every listing is a business owned and run by people in your community, not a national chain or franchise.
What qualifies
- Independently owned. The business is not owned or operated by a national or global corporation.
- Locally rooted. The owners live in or near the community they serve.
- Not a national franchise brand. A franchise of a national chain carries the chain’s brand, pricing, and supply decisions, so it is listed with the chain, not here.
- Community institutions welcome. Churches, volunteer fire companies, legion posts, libraries, and local nonprofits belong to the community and stay listed.
What we exclude
National and global chains, big-box stores, franchise brands, corporate-owned provider networks, and kiosk or drop-box locations. We removed thousands of them so the businesses owned by your neighbors rise to the top.
Why it matters
Studies by Civic Economics show that when you spend $100 at a locally owned business, roughly $53 stays in your local economy. Spend it at a national chain and about $14 stays. Searching local first keeps your money working in Mifflin County.
Spot a chain? Tell us.
Our data comes from public sources and is cleaned continuously, but no filter is perfect. If you find a chain or franchise listed, let us know and we will review it promptly. If you own a locally owned business that is missing, suggest it or claim your free listing on our plans page.
